In an unexpected turn in the constellation of Hollywood relationships, Nicole Kidman has officially filed for divorce from country star Keith Urban after nearly two decades together. The documents, filed on September 30 in Davidson County, Tennessee, list “irreconcilable differences” as the grounds for dissolution and mark the date of separation as the same day the petition was submitted.
Kidman, 58, and Urban, 57, share two daughters: Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. The filing comes on the heels of months spent largely apart Kidman was in London working on Practical Magic 2 this summer, while Urban toured behind his “High and Alive” world tour. According to sources, the split had been quietly brewing behind the scenes for some time.
Court documents reveal that the couple negotiated a detailed parenting agreement prior to the public filing. Urban signed the plan on August 29, and Kidman on September 6. Under that agreement, Kidman will serve as primary residential parent, with their daughters spending 306 days of the year with her and 59 days with Urban. The plan provides that Urban will have parenting time on alternate weekends, and the agreement includes specifications for holidays, vacations, and important decision-making in their children’s lives.
Remarkably, the divorce agreement stipulates that neither party will pay alimony or spousal support. The documents state that each earns more than $100,000 per month and will be responsible for their own debts and obligations. The agreement also asserts that neither parent holds joint assets in a way that requires division under this settlement. Instead, real estate holdings are managed through trusts, limited liability companies, or other entities, and assets titled individually belong exclusively to that party.
Further, every piece of personal property from furnishings to jewelry to vehicles has already been allocated in a manner satisfactory to both parties. They also agreed not to disparage each other and to encourage their daughters to maintain a loving relationship with both parents. Each party is required to attend a parenting seminar within 60 days of the filing.
Friends and insiders have characterized Kidman’s emotions around the split as deeply felt. Some describe her as hurt and feeling betrayed a sentiment that adds emotional weight to an otherwise meticulously laid out legal agreement. In private, she is said to have been fighting to salvage the marriage until the end. Urban, many believe, had distanced himself in recent months, although neither party has publicly confirmed the underlying reasons for the breakup.
Throughout their long marriage, Kidman and Urban often spoke of mutual support, especially in challenging times. But sources now suggest Kidman had increasingly carried the emotional weight of their relationship in recent years particularly as her career reemerged and she juggled motherhood, fame, and creative ambition.
While neither has made an official public statement, Kidman’s family especially her sister Antonia—has reportedly rallied around her. Because Tennessee law requires waiting at least 90 days before a divorce can be finalized, the legal split will not be immediate.
The end of the Kidman-Urban marriage marks the closing of a long chapter that began in 2005 when the two were introduced at a G’Day USA gala honoring Australian talent in Los Angeles. They wed a year later in Sydney, melding two international careers into a life together that spanned continents, red carpets, and stages.
For fans and observers, the split is especially poignant given the couple’s previous public image of stability, mutual care, and shared parenting. Now, as they disentangle legal and personal ties, people are looking at how two creative, high-profile individuals carefully divide life, assets, and family without fanfare or spectacle.
