Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed today that James Gunn, the visionary behind the successful 2025 Superman reboot, will write and direct the next installment in DC’s “Super‑Family” film lineup a project that features David Corenswet’s Superman in a major capacity, though not officially titled Superman 2
This announcement aligns with Gunn’s previous remarks that his upcoming project may not follow the traditional sequel formula even though he did tease fans via Threads that, “I JUST DID!” in reference to BTS work on a follow-up. Clearly, Superman remains central, but expectations should lean toward a broader ensemble rather than a straightforward solo narrative.
The “Super‑Family” initiative continues the DC Universe’s Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” which Superman kickstarted earlier this summer. Upcoming cinematic projects include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Clayface, both slated for release in 2026, along with an upcoming Wonder Woman feature. Expanding the scope beyond films, the DC Studios strategy also calls for interconnected television content, featuring titles such as The Penguin, Peacemaker Season 2, and the new superhero series Lanterns.
Notably, the long-anticipated The Batman: Part II, helmed by Matt Reeves with Robert Pattinson reprising his role, is set to begin filming in spring 2026. Though separate from the DCU storyline, it broadens the theatrical outlook with a release scheduled for October 1, 2027.
Putting Gunn at the helm for the next Super‑Family film sends an intentional message. It signals a strong, hands-on creative vision anchored around Superman while simultaneously building outside narrative threads to weave into the larger DC tapestry. Whether this upcoming movie serves as character deep dive or catalyst for wider ensemble storytelling, fans can anticipate a blend of emotional weight and mythic stakes.
