Felicity Huffman has publicly expressed her support for the upcoming Desperate Housewives reboot, which is being developed by Kerry Washington in collaboration with Disney's Onyx Collective and showrunner Natalie Chaidez. The new iteration aims to bring a fresh perspective to Wisteria Lane by focusing on a diverse cast of women of color, promising a "fun, sexy, darkly comedic soap/mystery" that resonates with contemporary audiences.
While promoting her new Lifetime movie, The Thirteenth Wife: Escaping Polygamy, on Good Morning America, Huffman, 62, shared her enthusiasm for the reboot. "Isn't that great? They're gonna do Wisteria Lane with women of color, and I am all for it," she said. She humorously added, "I'm gonna do craft service for it," highlighting her support for the project.
Despite her excitement, Huffman believes the new series should stand on its own. She stated that it would be "distasteful" for her to appear in the reboot, emphasizing that the show should "just live on its own." Huffman also expressed confidence in the involvement of original creator Marc Cherry, suggesting that his participation would help maintain the show's distinctive voice.
The original Desperate Housewives series aired on ABC from 2004 to 2012 featuring Huffman as Lynette Scavo, a role that earned her a Primetime Emmy Award in 2005. The show was known for its blend of comedy, drama, and mystery, set against the backdrop of suburban life on Wisteria Lane.
The announcement of the reboot has sparked mixed reactions among fans. Some have criticized the idea, accusing it of lacking originality and expressing concerns that it might not live up to the legacy of the original series.
Huffman's endorsement adds a significant voice of support to the project, highlighting the importance of diverse storytelling in modern television. As the reboot progresses, it aims to honor the essence of the original series while introducing fresh narratives that reflect today's societal dynamics.
